Press Release on Behalf of Earthlife Namibia

Please find the following press release from my friend and colleague at Earthlife Namibia on upcoming educational events about the hazards of uranium mining in Namibia.  I have learned a lot from Earthlife Namibia and Bruno Chareyron of CRIRAD on the extent and depth of these hazards and hope that you will be able to attend the upcoming events to keep yourselves informed to make positive changes for our country and the world.

Let us remember that we must stand united for our Earth, our home, because none survive alone!

PRESS RELEASE on Behalf of Earthlife Namibia:

"We would like to inform you about a new upcoming event: The Uranium Film Festival

Earthlife Namibia and the Goethe Centre are organising a Uranium Film Festival soon to be presented in the Goethe Centre in Windhoek, the Habitat Centre in Katutura and in Swakopmund, venue still to be announced. The documentaries are mainly focussing on uranium mining in different countries including Namibia and the implications thereof. The audience will learn about uranium, the material that fuels all nuclear power plants worldwide.

The film makers travelled around the world interviewing scientists, industrialists, managers of mining companies, politicians, mine workers, indigenous people and civil society to get a better picture of the pros and cons of the nuclear industry.

We are very proud to present a number of experts who will be available for discussion after each film screening.

The Uranium Film Festival will start on 27th March 2012 with the Africa Premiere of the film ‘Yellow Cake – The Dirt Behind Uranium’. The documentary accompanies for several years the biggest clean-up operation in the history of uranium mining as happened in the former East-Germany and takes the viewers to the big mines in Namibia, Australia and Canada.

We are pleased to announce the presence of Joachim Tschirner throughout the shows of ‘Yellow Cake’. He is the producer and scrip writer of the film and he will moderate the discussions following his film. The audience will certainly benefit from his many years of filming uranium mining operations. The first showing of the film will be on 29th March in the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre.

Another highlight will be the visit of Bruno Chareyron from France in April. He is an Engineer in nuclear physics and Director of CRIIRAD, an independent research laboratory on radiation. He has expertise in the nuclear sector for more than 20 years, especially in the field of radiation detection and the impacts on environment and health through radiation.

We are still discussing the attendance of other radiation experts depending on their availability. More details regarding venues and dates will soon be announced in the media."

The Loss of a Conservation Hero

The world of conservation suffered a great loss on the 2nd of March 2012, when Lawrence Anthony passed away peacefully in his sleep. Known internationally for his compassionate intervention at the Baghdad Zoo during the coalition invasion of Iraq, and his subsequent books Babylon’s Ark and The Elephant Whisperer, his life was a true reflection of an extraordinary man who lived by the mantra that nothing is insurmountable. As founder of “The Earth Organization”, his initiatives will continue to make a massive impact in the world of conservation.

Anthony is an award winning conservationist, explorer, adventurer, author and founder of The Earth Organization. His new book 'The Last Rhinos' will be released at the end of March.

His sons say that their father was a remarkable man who lived his life to the fullest and never looked back on any choices he made.

He leaves behind his wife Francoise, his two sons, Dylan and Jason, and two grandsons, Ethan and Brogan.

He was truly one of my heroes and he will surely be missed by the whole EARTH. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends, including the wildlife he saved. May Mr. Anthony rest in peace, knowing his legacy lives on in the wildlife and in those of us he inspired.
